Allium schubertii

Description

Allium schubertii is one of the shorter alliums at only 2 feet but its flower head that is 4-6 inches wide with it’s explosive structure makes up for this. It is ideal for containers with its star shaped pink red flowers and is always a talking point at Chelsea. Allium schubertii make great garden plants and just need a light free draining fertile soil.

Cultivation Instructions

Alliums perform very well with early flowering perennials and are also popular with bees and butterflies. Alliums will naturalise very well in most well drained soils. This variety will with stand some water logging of the soil. Cultivate soils to a depth of 20cms and plant bulbs with the pointy bit facing upwards. Bulbs should be planted as per the growing information shown below.

Feed bulbs with bone meal or similar during the flowering period to ensure they remain health for years to come. Plant in areas that are not exposed to the worst of the elements and in soils that have not been freshly manured. Regularly feed during the growing season with foods such as well rotted manures, Tomato feed and bone meal.

Keep well fed during the growing season and if possible mulch borders with well rotted manure or compost over the winter.
