Description

Begonia double white has superb pure white flowers that will draw the eye in any planting scheme. We like to provide large 6/+cm tubers as we know these will bring a summer of flowers. Begonias brighten up the shady areas of any garden and although will tolerate full sun, benefit from partial shade. Keep the soil around them moist whilst flowering but not over watered. Protect young shoots from slug damage and remember to feed during the flowering period.

Growing Instructions

Start off tubers in a greenhouse or similar from January to March. Harden off before planting out after the fear of frosts have passed. They can also be planted direct into containers or borders outside from April on-wards. Soils should be well cultivated to a fine crumb and the tubers planted with the top just showing above the soil level. Begonias benefit from taking of the dead flowers which will encourage new ones.

Double begonia will flower right through until the first frosts. If planting in pots use a 50/50 mix of multi purpose compost and something similar to John innes number 2 to provide good drainage. Begonias have a long flowering period which starts in July and goes right through the summer. Remove the dead flowers throughout the season to encourage new flower growth. Begonias will flower until the first frosts of the winter so are great for summer colour.

Tip: It is often difficult to tell which way up to plant begonias. The stems will appear from the rough or concave side of the bulb. Feed with bone-meal or tomato feed during the flowering season to ensure plump flowers
