Description

Broccoli purple sprouting is among the most popular of the sprouting varieties. Broccoli purple sprouting is very hardy and as such will produce an abundance of dark purple spears, in March. Once cooked these spears will turn green. An easy variety to grow which will does perform very well in the garden. The seeds can be started off in seed trays and pricked out into pots or transplanted direct into the vegetable bed.

Cultivation Instructions:

Sowing Indoors: They can be started off under glass from March-April and seedlings can either be re-potted into bigger single pots or planted outdoors as below.

Sow/Plant outdoors:  Cultivate soils to a depth of 15-20cms and rake the top surface to provide a fine crumb to plant the seeds into. Sow seeds outside from April to May. As the seedlings appear, thin to 7cm apart. When they are about 10-15cm tall, transplant to the growing site about 60cm apart, planting them 2cm deeper than in the seed bed. Water well.

For the best performance and yield keep well fed and watered over the growing months.

Do not plant if soils are waterlogged.

Care Tips:

Pick regularly when the spears are well formed but before they open. Take central spear first to encourage a lot of side shoots.

Soil type: Free draining light soils that are humus rich.

Aspect: Full sun but also ok in partial shade.

Position: Prefer open planting in vegetable beds.
