A great combination of orange hues comprising 25 Tulip Orange Emperor and 5 Fritillaria imperialis Rubra.
Crown imperials as they are commonly known, are outstanding additions to the garden and will stand out in any planting scheme. The flowers are really great and before they appear we are sure you will also enjoy the foliage and flower stem which is variegated. Leave to naturalise for many years and they will work really well when planting with sultry coloured tulips or alternatively the taller alliums and eremurus. An excellent choice for the garden as it is really outstanding. Fritillarias are quite easy to grow and will naturalise extremely well. Remember to feed during the growing season with bone meal or similar to give the bulb energy for the following years flowers.
Fosteriana or Emperor tulips as they are also known are a well established group and as such are used widely in planting schemes, tubs and containers. These tulips are a fantastic group that produce some of the largest flowers of all tulips. Ensure the soil is kept full of nutrients during the growing season and if needed feed with bonemeal or water in tomatoe food during the leaf and flower stage. Cultivate the soil well before planting to a depth of 20cms, plant bulbs 15cms deep and 8-10cms apart. It is traditional to plant tulips in October when the ground starts to cool down. If this is a concern do not worry if you plant them earlier or later as they will still grow well. Tulips do benefit from using bulb starter when first planting and if you can loosen the soil to a depth of 20cms that would also be helpful to the root development. Start off with Bulb Starter to really give them a good start.
