Cultivation instructions
Darwin tulips such as Tulip Darwin Hybrid Conqueror are excellent for cut flower, having strong stems and big traditional oval shaped flowers. Darwin hybrid tulips are very good in all types of containers and when grown in the borders. They benefit from being planted with low flowering bulbs such as anemones and muscari as well as of course annuals and perennials. Before planting cultivate the soil to a depth of 25cms (if possible) and plant bulbs 15cms deep and 10-15cms apart in well drained fertile soil. Soils should be free draining, so in heavier soils add grit or well rotted humus matter to help with drainage.
Protect early growth in the spring from slugs and snails and remove dead heads after flowering (if not using as a cut flower) to get the best from them.
Care tips:
Tip: Keep tulips well fed during the growing season and remember to lift them at the end of the season. Only the big bulbs should be kept to flower for the following year. Ideal foods are well rotted manures, tomato feed and bone meal.
Tulips are often treated as annuals as flowering performance the following year is never as good.
