Tulip Single Early Purple Prince was first registered in 1987 and holds its place in our range very easily. Purple Prince as the name suggests produces flowers that are lilac purple flame, with the inside of the flower a beetroot red.
Single early tulips such as Tulip Single Early Purple Prince are ideal for bedding, containers and in borders. Besides being an ideal tulip for borders and containers most varieties are also well suited for forcing indoors. Single early tulips are quite often featured in formal bedding schemes because they are one of the earliest tulips to flower, are relatively short and you can choose from a number of unique coloured varieties.
They are most effective when planted in groups of 10 or more. Before planting ensure the soil is cultivated to a depth of 15 to 20cms and is free draining, in the heavier soils add grit and rotted humus material to give extra drainage. Plant bulbs with the pointed bit upwards at a depth of 10-15cms (deeper in sandy/loose soils) and 10cms apart. When planting in containers planting depths and distances are governed by container size and the number of bulbs you want to put in.
Plant tulips anytime from Late September through to early December, they prefer to be planted into soils that are cooling down after the summer. Use Bulb Starter to give them a really good start and to encourage subsequent flowering.
Remember to lift tulips at the end of the season. Only the big bulbs should be kept to flower for the following year.
Tulips are often treated as annuals as flowering performance the following year is never as good.
